Valangaiyar, Idangaiyar in Modi documents – A Perspective Study
Abstract
The records of the valangaiyar and idangaiyar in the Modi documents of the Marathas in power in Thanjavur have been examined. The ethnic numbers of the valangaiyar and idangaiyar are differently recorded in different documents. According to Modi documents, there were 24 valangaiyars (right wingers) living in the Pudukkottai areas and nine idangaiyars (left wingers). Evidence of valangai and idangai due to caste differences somehow underscores the discrimination that caused both factions to stand in a team. The study also highlights the benefits shown to right-wingers. The study also highlights the benefits shown to the valangaiyar and idangaiyars. When these are further examined it is possible to know the caste hierarchy of that period.
