Beliefs of Ancient Tamizh People in Ten Idylls (Pattuppattu)

         

Abstract

This paper delineates the various beliefs of our ancestors found in the Pattuppaṭṭu (known as Ten Idylls / Ten Lays in English) poetic lines, which was sung by Eight poets. The ancient Tamizh people strongly believed that the sounds created by the birds and animals must create a positive or negative impact to them. They also had a strong faith in astrology, augury, choromania, demons etc. The first grammatical book, Tholkappiyam also denotes about the faiths and beliefs of ancient Tamizh People in sake, demons & augury are also taken as supporting evidence for this study. Thus, this paper tries to reveal the beliefs of our ancient era found in the Ten Idylls.
