Puthupunal Vizha in Sangam Literature

   

Abstract

In Sangam literature, the phrase “vilavu” denotes the word vizhakkal. The word vilavu exemplifies vizha or festival. These vizhakkal were ritualistic and recreational. These vizhakkal were entertaining and everyone from the community such as kings, men, women, elders, and children participated. 

Though the Sangam literature mentions about various vizhakkal they were stated through short phrases and metaphors. The arrival of puthuppunal is celebrated as a grand festival. The information related to puthuppunal was elaborately described. In addition, it was celebrated as a resource ritual and community-based festival. 

When was puthuppunal celebrated, how was it celebrated, where was it celebrated, who were the participants, and what were the events included in the festival are the main research problems of this study.

The research problems are described through the primary data obtained from the Sangam literature using historical and sociological approaches and how puthuppunal is descriptive and differs from the other festivals mentioned in the Sangam literature.
