Beliefs and Omens of the People of Thinaikkudimanthar

Abstract

In the context of ancient Tamil beliefs, good and bad omens were observed. The sound of wall lizard, the cooing of a cuckoo inside the house, storks fly up in the sky, the blowing of a swarm of beetles in the bush, bangles were tight on the front hand and shoulders, throbbing of the left eye, shepherd's pipe sound - all these were considered good omens. At the same time, bad omens were also heavily regarded. Heat in all eight directions, the Sun appearing red and hot, the sound of owls and other birds that bring bad luck, like a tooth falling to the ground in a dream, like the crumbling of forts with soldiers inside, and similar signs of misfortune were believed by the ancient Tamil people. They saw these as indicators of impending danger. The sound of thunder during the night, the failure of a lamp lit at home, and the inability to sleep were also considered inauspicious. Frightened by signs of impending danger, they sought the protection of God.
